Procedure of the fitting of the dentures consists of various steps. These are:

  • Examination – Thorough examination of the whole mouth will be done first.

  • Impressions – The impressions of the both upper and lower jaw will be taken.

  • Models – The models or the plastic or wax patterns are created then.

  • Trial and assessment – The models will then be tried by the patient and their comfort, appearance and fit will be assessed.

  • Dentures – final dentures will then be ordered.

  • Donning and adjustment – The dentures will then be applied and adjustments will be made if and when required.

 

Question 1. What is a denture?

Answer. These are the removable replacement of the missing teeth and the surrounding tissues which are made up of acrylic, porcelain, nylon or metal.

Question 2. What are the types of dentures available?

Answer. There are two types of dentures available:

Complete Dentures – These are applied when all the teeth are gone, sometimes immediate dentures are provided till the permanent ones are in process of making but they need more adjustments.

Partial Dentures – These are applied when some natural teeth are still present either in upper or the lower jaw. The bridges are attached to the natural teeth first, then the partial dentures are attached to the bridge.

Question 3. How long does it take to heal after the removal of teeth?

Answer. 8 to 12 weeks

Question 4. Once applied, how long the dentures last?

Answer. They are supposed to last a lifetime, but annual dental checkups are required to check any wear n tear.

Answer. Implants supported dentures

Question 6. What are they made up of?

Answer. Polymethylmethacrylate Acrylic (PMMA)

Question 7.   How will I get accustomed to the dentures?

Answer. This will take some time, but the steps that will help are:

  • Soft food first

  • Cut food into small pieces

  • Chew slowly

  • Use both sides of the mouth

  • Gradually proceed to harder diet

Question 8. What are the don’ts while wearing a denture?

Answer. – Avoid sticky food

  • Avoid chewing gums

  • Don’t use tooth picks

  • Avoid hard food in the beginning

Question 9. Will I have to wear them at night?

Answer. You will be advised to wear them at night as well in the initial phase but after you get accustomed, you will be advised to remove them and place them in water or saline solution at night.

Question 10. What are the advantages of Dentures?

Answer. Some advantages are as follows:

  • Improved biting, Chewing and speaking

  • Improved Facial appearance

  • Improved smile

Question 11. What are the after-care or the maintenance steps?

Answer. Some basic oral hygiene habits need to be followed. These are:

  • Brush and rinse dentures daily or after meals

  • Brush gums, tongue and palate after removing the denture

  • Regular dental check-up is required

  • If you are using adhesive, use it occasionally and it should be ADA approved.

Question 12. When should I contact dentist?

Answer. If you see any of these signs while having dentures, you are advised to give us a visit:

  • If you hear any clicking sound while biting or speaking

  • If the denture slips from the gums

  • If you are feeling uncomfortable while wearing them

  • If they look worn to you

  • If you are having bad breath

  • Bleeding gums.

Question 13. Are there any complications?

Answer. No, there are not any, though you may feel some discomfort in the initial phase, these are:

  • The dentures may feel a bit odd

  • Increase in saliva for the first 12 to 24 hours because brain perceive it as food for some first few hours

  • Minor sores
