  1. Assessment – Here, the patient’s thorough dental check-up is done and all the diseases and the medical conditions including the medications will be discussed.

  2. X-Ray – The x-ray of the whole denture as well as the concerned area will be taken.

  3. Surgical Procedure – In this procedure, the precision channels are created in the jaw bone and the implant is placed inside.

  4. Healing – The healing takes 6 to 12 weeks.

  5. Ambument – After the healing is done, small connectors named as abutments are placed which serve as the connectors to the artificial teeth.

  6. Impressions and shade – The impressions will then be taken for a custom made crown and also the correct shade will be determined.

  7. Crown – The placement of crown (artificial teeth) is then done and You have a new tooth or the teeth as good as the natural one.

Question 1. What is a dental implant?

Answer. These are the metal frames which are fitted as the roots of the tooth inside the jaw bone, in order to provide the stable base to the artificial tooth so that it can serve as the natural one. So these are placed to replace a missing tooth, teeth or the whole denture.

Question 2. What is a dental implant made up of?

Answer. It is made up of titanium, which is a bio-compatible implant which is not rejected by body, and is very strong and steady material to provide a stable base.

Question 3. How long do they last?

Answer. The implant lasts life-long generally, cap (artificial tooth) over it lasts for 10-15 years average but with good oral hygiene they can also last life-long.

Question 4. Am I an ideal candidate for implant?

Answer. Anybody who is having controlled blood sugar levels and no active periodontal disease is generally a good candidate for implant.

Question 5. Can a diabetic have that dental implant inserted?

Answer. Yes, a diabetic can have a dental implant but the blood sugar levels should be in control and not too high, as that can delay the healing and can invite some infections.

Question 6. Are they better than the bridges and crowns?

Answer. Yes, they are. There are many advantages of them over the bridges and crowns:

  1. No adjacent teeth preparation needed in case of a single missing tooth.

  2. No mouth sore or gagging

  3. These are more stable, so there is no risk of the implant coming out or falling off.

  4. They also support the facial skeleton and thus keep the appearance of the face natural.

  5. They don’t decay with time, as they are inserted inside the bone.

  6. Though it is a surgical procedure, but the pain felt is lower than the extraction.

Question 7. What are the types of the Dental Implants?

Answer. They can be of two types:

  1. Endosteal Implant – These are surgically implanted into the jaw bone, which when healed then an artificial tooth is applied on it.

  2. Subperiosteal Implant – The metal frame is placed just over the jaw bone and not inside it, which when healed then an artificial tooth is applied on it.

Question 8. What are the parts of a dental implant?

Answer. It has three parts:

  • Implant frame

  • Ambument

  • False tooth

Question 9. Is it used to replace single tooth only?

Answer. No, It can be used to replace more than one missing tooth. It can also be used to replace a removable denture by fixing two to six implants inside the jaw bone.

Question 10. What is the post-procedural care in the dental implant procedure?

Answer. Nothing much, good oral hygiene and dental visits twice a year is enough.
