There are various steps in the crown or bridge fitting procedure. These are listed here:

  1. Examination – The tooth to be capped is thoroughly examined first, some x-rays if required are taken to check the health of the root if present.

  2. Preparing – In this phase, the tooth or the nearby teeth are filed so that they can fit in the cap snugly in crown and bridge fitting respectively.

  3. Impressions– The impressions for crown or bridge are taken then.

  4. Shade Matching – If PFM is being used, then the correct shade of the neighboring teeth are determined so that the crown or the bridge look like a real n natural teeth.

  5. Temporary Crown – While the permanent ones are sent to make in a lab, we will provide you with the temporary one to avoid any infection or damage to the prepared tooth.

  6. Permanent Crown – When the permanent crown is made, then some local anesthesia is applied over the tooth, and the permanent crown is placed over the tooth with the help of some dental cement and the tooth becomes as functional and as good looking as your natural one.

Question 1. What are the crowns and bridges?

Answer. These are the dental restoration fixed prosthetic devices which are placed over a damaged tooth (crown) or over a missing tooth (Bridge). These are cemented with the help of dental cement. Patient can not remove these devices of his own.

Question 2. Why and when are they used?

Answer. These are used in many dental conditions. Some are as follows:

  • To improve the cosmetic appearance of the tooth

  • Improve the shape or alignment of the tooth

  • Making a damaged teeth more functional

  • To Protect the weak tooth from fracture

  • To restore an already broken tooth

  • To attach a bridge on the missing tooth

  • To cover a dental implant

  • To cover a tooth after RCT.

Question 3. What is the difference between crown and bridge?

Answer. Crown – It’s the cap that is used to cover a partially damaged or weak tooth to make it more functional and restore it.

Bridge – It is used to replace a missing tooth. It has two parts:

  1. 1. Pontic is the central part which replaces the missing tooth.

  2. Abutments are the sides of the pontic which act as the anchors and cover the natural teeth as caps.

Question 4. Once applied, how long do they last?

Answer. They are supposed to last a lifetime normally, but 10-15 years is the general time. Though they can last for a lifetime, if proper oral care n regular checkups have been done.

Question 5. What are the types of Crowns that can be used?

Answer. There are various types of crowns that the patient can choose from:

  1. Stainless steel – These are temporary crowns made up of steel, these are made to wear till the patient wait for the permanent crown. It’s also used for children.

  2. Porcelain/Ceramic – These are attractive crowns, but not very strong. These are good for people with metal allergies.

  3. Gold/Metal Alloys – These are strong crowns which rarely break and also not prone to any infections but the metal color is quite easily visible.

  4. PFM – These are one of the best crowns available, as they are

  • Strong and attractive

  • Tooth colored

  • Functional

  • Cosmetically pleasing

Question 6. Is there any after care required?

Answer.  No special care is required, the patient is just asked to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. However some hard objects like chewing ice etc should be avoided.

Question 7. What is Onlay or ¾ crown?

Answer. In these types of crowns, as the name suggests, they don’t cover the tooth fully. Good for second molar or the premolars as they are not fully visible when a person smiles.

Question 8. What care is required for the temporary crown phase?

Answer. During the temporary crown phase, following things should be taken care of:

  • Avoid hard and sticky food

  • Avoid using that side while chewing where the temporary crown is placed

  • Avoid flossing as it can take the crown out

  • Use gentle brushing and mouthwash only.

Question 9. Are there any complications for bridges and crowns?

Answer. As this is a restorative treatment, the complications are unlikely, but few issues that can occur in the fitting of crown or bridge are:

  • Tooth Sensitivity (temporary)

  • Chipped crown

  • Loose crown

  • Sometimes, a dark line near gum line can be shown in PFM, if that’s present then the crown has to be replaced.

So as such no complications are there, only fitting issue are faced, rarely, so the crown is replaced with a well fitted new one.
